General Volunteering Information
Did you ever wonder what it is that is so special about Artaban? Some would say that it's the natural beauty of camp and others would argue that it is the friendships that are formed through years of amazing camping experiences at Artaban. We like to boast that it is our high calibre volunteers that make Artaban so special.
We offer our volunteers a 25% discount for children who are of camp age, and of course a wonderful week away from home on a scenic boat ride to Gambier Island, room and board completely covered, and no cooking or dishes all week.
Volunteering may be the most rewarding and humbling thing you ever do in your lifetime. Are you interested in giving of your time and gifts to help make Artaban a special place? Training
For those who volunteer at camp, we offer special training sessions in addition to the training that each camp session receives prior to camp. If this is your first time to volunteer with Artaban, please submit an application form and training registration form to the office. You must be at least 18 years of age and clear a criminal record check, in addition to being interviewed as part of the initial screening process. In-town and On-site training happens each spring. Please contact Volunteer Management Committee at vmcommittee@campartaban.com for more specific information on training.
Directors
Directors are responsible for directing all aspects of each camp session. They plan the programs and schedules for campers that will support the mission statement of camp. They also recruit the volunteer staff for their session and prepare with them well in advance of the session so they are ready for a fun week. Directors have strong leadership skills and act as a positive role model to all staff and campers.
Cabin Counsellors
Counsellors are the heart of Artaban and are often long remembered by campers. They are responsible for a group of up to eight campers and will be their main leader for one camp session. They provide the campers with a fun and safe environment to enjoy camp in. Counsellors cultivate positive relationships with campers and remain with the same group of campers throughout the session.
Theme Leaders
Theme Leaders are responsible for preparing a Christian and Anglican message for the campers throughout their week. Theme Leaders must have demonstrated a solid Christian commitment and a love for reaching people. They are responsible for running daily chapel services and daily sessions for campers. The focus is on integrating Christianity with the daily lives of campers as a gentle introduction to Christianity. Theme leaders must have good working knowledge of the bible and experience working with children or youth. Some musical experience is an asset.
Nurses
Nurses must be an RN or student member in good standing with CRNBC. Responsibilities include overseeing the medical welfare and health needs of people of all ages in physical, spiritual, emotional and mental wellness by following evidenced based practice. This is a great chance to positively impact people of all ages, and to see, feel and enjoy immediate returns. Your personal touch is encouraged and welcomed.
Sports directors
Sports directors oversee a variety of fun activities for campers including sports activities, wide games, climbing wall, and out-tripping. They plan safe and exciting activities for campers. Program staff members support counsellors in their role.
Waterfront assistants
The waterfront is a popular place to be, especially on sunny days. The primary responsibility of Waterfront Assistants is to assist the summer lifeguards and to help with boating and sailing instruction. Also, assistance with lifejackets and the many “beads” that campers strive for is always appreciated.
Camp Moms
The Director's Assistant assists the director in his/her duties and is available to step in at times when the director is unable.
Especially for our younger sessions, Camp Moms are the official TLC provider and are necessary for encouragement and support of all campers and staff.
Crafts directors
Craft directors are responsible for planning creative age-appropriate crafts for each session. Craft directors look for different ways to support the campers’ creativity. Artaban has a ton of resources and materials that are ordered ahead of time to accommodate your programming plans.
